With most watches in our webshop, you can distinguish two types of glass: mineral glass and sapphire glass. But what exactly is the difference between these types of glass? And what is sapphire coating? We explain it to you in our Watch News.
Actually, it's a bit of a short answer. Because in addition to mineral glass and sapphire glass, there is also plastic (acrylic) glass, for example, and there is a combination of mineral glass with a sapphire coating. But the two main types of glass remain mineral and sapphire.
Most of our Citizen watches have sapphire crystal
You won't actually come across plastic glass in our webshop. This is almost only used in cheaper watches. It has one big disadvantage, the glass is easily scratched. And if we hate anything, it's scratching the glass. Yet plastic also has an advantage: it is flexible. It doesn't snap or crack easily.
A good alternative is tempered mineral glass. This glass is the most widely used watch glass in the world. Almost every watch from about 70 euros to around 700 euros has mineral glass. It is a lot stronger than plastic glass. In normal use, it will not be scratched. It may not be as hard as sapphire glass, but it is more flexible. This is why mineral glass is placed in some dive watches instead of the harder sapphire. Mineral glass is more flexible under the special conditions at great depths.

Our Versace watches have sapphire glass
The strongest watch glass in the world is sapphire glass. But this glass is also a lot more expensive to make. Usually, it's not on watches under 500 euros. But there are exceptions. For example, all watches from Gc, and Versace have sapphire glass, and Citizen also has some competitively priced models with sapphire glass.

The TW Steel ACE Diver watches also have sapphire glass
Sapphire glass is a synthetic type of glass. It is made of aluminium oxide. This glass is so hard that it will not scratch. A disadvantage of this type of glass is that it cracks faster on larger surfaces, but this is not the case with watches. It is the clearest glass in existence. In terms of hardness, it is only surpassed by crystal and natural diamond.
So sapphire glass is more expensive and makes a watch cost more money than one with mineral glass. But there is a middle way: sapphire-coated mineral glass. It ensures that the top layer of the mineral glass is extra protected from scratches.
Does the watch on your wrist have little to endure? For example, do you not walk along rocks or root around in the garden every day? Then a watch with tempered mineral glass is for you. Does a watch on your wrist have to endure a bit more? Does it run the risk of being damaged? Then opt for sapphire glass.
