When you read the text on the back of your watch, you might think you can instantly tell how waterproof it is. After all, it often states something like 50 meters, and watch brands also include depth ratings in their specifications, right? That’s correct! Your watch does indicate its water resistance. But be careful—there’s a good chance it’s not as waterproof as you might think...
Does it say on your watch, for example, that it's waterproof up to 30 meters (3 atmosphere/3 bar)? You might think you can safely take a splash in the pool with this timepiece. Unfortunately: nothing could be further from the truth! You can NOT swim with a watch that is waterproof to 30 meters. In fact, we recommend you do not even take a shower with this watch on your wrist. It's an ingredient for disaster!
A 30 meters (3ATM) waterproof watch is actually only splash-proof. It can withstand a walk in the rain buth nothing more.
A watch that is waterproof up to 50 meters (5 atmosphere/5 bar) is not suitable to wear when swimming or snorkeling. With this watch on your wrist it is safe to shower or take bath with, but swimming might destroy the movement inside the watch. There is a good chance that the movement will go swimming too. So don't!
And what about a watch that is waterproof up to 100 meters (10 atmosphere/10 bar)? Shouldn't you be able to dive with it? Well, no. Don't, it's not waterproof enough for that. You can swim with it but you cannot go meters under water with it.
With a watch that is waterproof up to 200 meters (20ATM or 20 bar), it is safe to go diving with. These kind of watches can be worn by professional divers. The best watches are suitable for deep-sea diving.
Looking for a watch that can be worn deep under water? One that is suitable for deep-sea diving and that can also be used to time your diving safety stops? Then consider a diving watch that is waterproof to 200 meters according to ISO certification ISO6425.
We recommend Citizen diving watches with excellent specifications and guaranteed water resistance. A large number of our Citizen models have ISO certification and are therefore extensively tested at 200 meters water pressure. These models are therefore waterproof for a guaranteed time at this water depth.
As you can see: not everything is what it seems in the watch world!
